School leader crisis: Overwhelmed by mounting mental health issues and public distrust, a ‘mass exodus’ of principals could be coming

Dedicated recruitment efforts, mentoring programs and other supports are among the strategies needed as job-related stress brought on by the pandemic is expected to lead to an exodus among school leaders, some principals and other experts say. Close to 40% of principals said they plan to leave their jobs within three years, a survey conducted this fall by the National Association of Secondary School Principals found.
