Teaching computer skills with a 1,300 year old game
Schools in Finland start teaching the foundations of coding to students in early grades using decidedly low-tech methods, writes Derek Newton, who visited schools for Helsinki Education Week. Young students in Finnish schools learn about coding and the skills that are key to it – such as problem-solving, iteration and sequencing – through tactile games of strategy such as chess.
