US schools fight to keep students amid fear of dropout surge

The increase in the number of students who are failing classes or chronically absent during the coronavirus pandemic have school leaders taking steps to help stave off an anticipated surge in student dropouts. To help, some testing requirements have been waived, and educators and school leaders are making calls and home visits, plus tracking students via social media.
